I know some foods boost melatonin and other hormones and help you go to sleep, and by proxy, dreams, but is there any sort of food that has a correlation to better dream recall, more vivid dreams or in general, higher lucidity?
P.S I'm not sure whether to put this in Q.A or discussion.
I think this is fine in the techniques section for now, as there's no thread that covers this subject here so far. Generally, it's best to assume a healthy balanced diet is the best approach, as no single food is known to increase lucidity. That said, few of us have diets that contain all the optimal nutrients. It's an important topic as it reminds us that psychology and biology are deeply connected, and a healthy body is required for a healthy mind. Foods rich in choline are a good place to start, as it is the precursor to acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is important in the formation of memories, clear thinking, and other traits linked to a lucid mind. Many people are deficient in choline. Eggs are a choline rich food that is both cheap and easy to introduce into one's diet. The Journal of the American College of Nutrition released a paper in 2016 stating that as many as 90% of Americans aren't getting enough choline in their diet. As always, it's important to remember that biology and chemistry are complex topics. Simply increasing intake in a certain food, vitamin or supplement may seem like the "easy" way to raise levels, but the chemistry of the body, and the interactions between various substances, can lead to unexpected results. There are also foods that *may* act as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (the most common naturally occurring cholinesterase inhibitors, the SGAs, are found in plants of Solanaceae such as potato, eggplant, and tomato) , which speculatively could be beneficial in raising acetylcholine levels during sleep (as other cholinesterase inhibitors, such as galantamine, are known to do so). Although there really isn't any useful research in this area in regards to dreaming (take that as a challenge, science students!). Many forums, websites, and videos like to act as if there are simple answers to questions like this, "make mugwort tea", "supplement with b6" etc., but the reality of the complex interactions between the elements of a person's diet and their biology and psychology are way beyond such simplistic solutions. If you hear claims about certain foods, herbs, etc, generally ignore them, as it tends to be hearsay and a huge oversimplification of an incredibly complicated subject. Those who do so and claim to be some kind of authority on lucid dreaming, are demonstrating their lack of responsibility and utter lack of comprehension on the intricacy of the science behind such things. For an example of just how complex this topic can be, take a look at this paper on Natural Inhibitors of Cholinesterases More important still, it's absolutely vital to discuss any changes in diet, or any supplementation, with a trained medical practitioner. I also recommend taking a look at this video on the subject of lucid dreaming pills.
