Last night I had a non lucid dream that involved swimming. I specifically recall being underwater for long amounts of time, and not being able to breath. I thought this was impossible as one of the most foolproof RCs is the nose pinch. This seems to be a recurring pattern actually because while writing this I just remember a failed DILD in which I did the nose pinch(in a non lucid dream), and it failed and I couldn't breath. Thoughts?

I know that I've had nightmares before where I was suffocating, but I guess in a nightmare, your expectation to experience something horrible is just very strong!
Thanks ill be sure to change my habits. Im still confused/impressed that a dream can simulate that sensation which I previously thought would make you wake up.
Hi, and welcome to the forum! No reality test will ever be 100% fool-proof. Expectations from waking life is one thing that may have caused you not to be able to breathe. The nose-pinch test is one of the most reliable ones, but again, as Daniel always says -- even that one will fail on occasion (I've had it fail, too). This is why it's wise to always perform backup tests, like the digital clock test, in addition! I believe he recently recommended that you always perform three individual tests right after one another while reality checking.
I'd say don't worry, this is normal -- although frustrating at the time!
